This course is devoted to the study of William Shakespeare as a way to illuminate and inspire psychoanalysis. Four plays by Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth and Pericles) will be explored toward the goal of enjoying this great literature while increasing our psychoanalytic skills. Two evenings will be devoted to each play. At the first session there will be an initial discussion of that play, followed by a discussion, two weeks later, of selected readings/psychoanalytic articles relating to the themes of the play. Reading materials will be provided by the instructor. No previous familiarity with Shakespeare is required.

CE credits pending.

WINTER COURSES

EAST LANSING:

(*,**,§) Continuous Case Conference with Margaret Sweet, Ph.D.

Thursdays, January 11 - April 20, 2018; 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

2875 Northwind Drive, Suite 124, in East Lansing

Course fee is $325

Margaret Sweet will resume facilitation of the CONTINUOUS CASE CONFERENCE. Our continuing attempts to understand the developmental origins and psychic functions of adaptive/maladaptive defense will be integrated with ongoing efforts, afforded by case presentations, to allow our patients self-experience to become “consciously discussable as opposed to unconsciously nonnegotiable”, what Klauber calls “internalization of the analytic process.” Our patients’ unique, adaptive selves will allow for exploration and application of various psychoanalytic theories and treatment modalities.

CE credits pending.

SPRING COURSES

ANN ARBOR:

(*,**) Sexuality and Gender taught by Reena Liberman, M.S. and Peter Wood, L.M.S.W.

Wednesday beginning April 4 through May 23, 2018, 9:30 - 11:30 am

Meeting at 1207 Packard, Ann Arbor.

Course fee is $170 ($190 for non-members).

The course will be conducted in a seminar style that will encourage participants to find ways to talk about the area of sexuality, one that is often difficult to address because of its long-standing associations with secrecy, shame, and psychopathology. We will move through readings of the 20th century and into the 21st century to see how theories have evolved; how they have influenced us and continue to influence us; and what they mean for us personally and, therefore, in our clinical practices. Readings will include classic, feminist, modern and post-modern, relational, and queer theory literature.

CE credits pending.
