This course serves as an introduction to and overview of important issues in the psychoanalytic relationship. The course includes an historical survey of views of the nature of the psychoanalytic relationship. It explores such concepts as abstincence, neutrality, self-disclosure, treatment alliance, transference, countertransference, one-person and two-person psychologies, and enactment.

This course will study the evolution of psychoanalytic thought from Freud to the present. We will look particularly at what pressures informed the creation of new schools of thought. We will also consider input from other fields such as post-modern philosophy, feminist theory, quantum physics, relativity theory, etc. to further understand the progression of psychoanalytic thinking.

Wednesdays, September 12-December 19, 2012, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
This 15 week conference course will concentrate on assisting the clinician in formulating and facilitating psychotherapeutic interventions using a psychoanalytic model and frame. The focus will be work with individuals, particularly adults and older adolescents. The class is especially suitable for those wishing to use psychoanalytic technique to inform brief treatments, crisis interventions and work in agency settings as well as with long term treatments and in standard private practice settings when psychoanalysis is not a feasible option. Each participant will be sharing clinical material from current ongoing cases. Enrollment is open to all certified or licensed to administer psychotherapies, and the course is repeatable.

This course will explore gender and sexuality from the perspective of contemporary psychoanalysis. We will consider questions such as:
How do contemporary relational perspectives on intersubjectivity, identities/multiplicity, and trans-identities shift our understandings about masculinity/femininity, sexuality, attractional orientation?
What do the terms ‘male/female’, ‘perversion/healthy’ mean and how do they function to contain/constrain identities?’ How do these dualities/polarities inform lived experiences of gender assignment and sexual behavior?
Topics will also include gender identity development, transsexualism, transvestism, desire, erotic fantasy. Case material will be used where appropriate. Required text are Female Sexuality: Contemporary Engagements, Donna Bassin (editor) and Boyhoods, Ken Corbett.

This course will explore present and past conceptualizations of the foundational dynamic and complex processes of transference/countertransference both through readings from the vast literature on the topic from different theoretical templates and through brief discussions of the instructor’s and the class participants’ clinical material. We will explore the conscious and unconscious choices that we make in working with transference/countertransference processes with the hope that we will grow in our ability to intervene more effectively with our patients.

Because of his ability to integrate real life experience with unconscious fantasy, Dr. John Bowlby enhanced the efficacy of psychoanalysis through his development of attachment theory. This course will explore this historic merger principally through readings from Psychoanalysis and Attachment Theory by Peter Fonagy et al. Class participants will able to discuss and apply to their own practices the significance of childhood traumatic attachment experience to the development of psychopathology.

This course will be centered around readings from prominent child analysts and psychodynamic therapists such as Ann Freud, Selma Fraiberg, Virginia Axline and Fritz Redl, as well as present-day contributions. The emphasis will be on the development of psychoanalytic thought and treatment of children and teens over time. Due to time limitations, the course will provide a sampling of readings and is not intended to be an in-depth exploration of any one author. Students will participate in leading group discussions of assigned readings. This course may include case presentations which are pertinent to assigned readings. What light does psychoanalysis shed on theories of moral and responsible behavior? How can we held accountable for actions based in unconscious motivation? How can psychoanalysis help individuals to be more ethical? Why should we be “good?” Readings and discussion will address these important questions. Readings will be from John Riker’s Ethics and the Discovery of the Unconscious and Why It Is Good to Be Good.
